Profile

Vichem is a Hungarian biotech research company focusing on signal transduction therapy with kinase inhibitors. Kinase inhibitors are in the front line of modern drug research.

Vichem was founded in 1999 by Axxima Pharmacuticals, Axel Ullrich and György Kéri to utilize its predecessor Biosignal’s technologies for drug discovery in the kinase field, based on the long term collaboration between Axel Ullrich (founder of SUgen and Axxima) and Gyorgy Keri. BioSignal was founded in 1991 as a university spin-off to develop TT232 for signal transduction therapy in cancer (in Clinical Phase II.). BioSignal collaborated with MPI (Axel Ullrich) and became the collaborative partner of SUgen Inc., USA from 1992-1999 (SU101 in Clinical Phase III.).

Vichem further developed the validation Library and NCL technology taken over from Biosignal and developed several novel platform technologies. Vichem established a drug discovery program in cancer and infectious diseases and provides research services utilizing its platform technologies in the kinase field.

Vichem performs advanced medicinal chemistry in the kinase inhibitory field based on its unique, in-house developed, Nested Chemical Library™ (NCL) technology. The NCL was designed on the platform of an up-to-date knowledge base what we have built up from the knowledge accumulated in our recent more than 20 years of kinase inhibitory chemistry. Our library is organized around more than 110 core structures and more than 500 scaffolds, and contains inhibitors against more than 150 kinases, providing the most diverse kinase inhibitory library available for drug research.

Utilizing our NCL, Masterkey, Pharmacophore modeling and scaffold hopping technologies we can provide patentable lead compounds against selected kinases in five research cycles in about one year. Using our KinaTor™ technology we can perform selectivity profiling and off target identification. We can develop preclinical candidates with lead optimization for efficacy and ADMET in an additional 2 years. The medicinal chemistry research team of Vichem is highly specialized in developing drug candidate protein kinase inhibitors (PKI).

Vichem has lead compounds and/or early preclinical candidates for Tuberculosis, Influenza, AIDS and 5 pathological kinase targets. Vichem established partnership with various European, American and Japanese institutions and companies, participates in several FP7 projects.

Vichem currently has 32 employees and co-workers (7 PhD and 12 MS chemists, 1 IT expert, 3 biologists, 6 technicians and 3 administrative employees) and 5 postdocs and PhD students. It has a strong Medicinal Chemistry team in 9 laboratories, a bioassay team in 2 laboratories and an IT team. Vichem is a founding partner of the Cooperation Research Center where KPS Ltd. is its associated partner for molecular biology and molecular diagnostics work.
